Spindleruv Mlyn belongs to one of the most popular skiing centre not just in Giant Mountains but in the whole Czech republic. Is situated about 715 - 1310 metres above the sea level where the Dolsky stream joins the river Labe. The town lies in the Giant Mountain National Park and extend in an area of 77 square kilometres and has got       4 parts - Predni Labska, Labska, Bedrichov and Svaty Petr. There lives about 1300 inhabitants during the year in Spindleruv Mlyn and in the season is increased for about 15 000 tourists.


KrkonošeThis original mining and wood cutting settlement started at the end of the 18. century to be called Spindleruv Mlyn after a mill of a Špindl clan built on the river Labe. From the end of the 18. century and mainly from the 19. century, the people started to build more. From chalets became nice hotels and restaurants. Most of them were build between the 1. and 2. world war and others after the year 1945. The symbol of Spindleruv Mlyn is a white bridge built in 1911 and is situated directly in the town centre. Above the town centre you can also find a St. Petr and Paul's church built in the year 1802.

In the old literature is Spindleruv Mlyn called as a Pearl of Giant Mountains because is situated in a beautiful area, in the middle of the highest czech mountains. In the time from May until October you can choose from a rich offer of tourist routes which will take you for a nice walk through the beautiful green valleys, mountains and woods. The best time for visitors is the second half of the summer and autumn where they can enjoy different colours of trees and also can forest fruit picking.

Spindleruv Mlyn is an ideal place for tourists which can use plenty of tourist and cyclic routes. The first snow starts to show at the end of October but the main winter season starts in December and lasts until April. The most favourite skiing areals are Svaty Petr and Medvedin. Both of them have got good snow conditions not just for professional skiers but for beginners too. In both of them are snowboard parks. If the weather isn't brilliant and isn't enough snow, the sloups are artificially covered with snow. Spindleruv Mlyn and its surrounding is also available to lovers of cross-country. There is also plenty of other sport activities - for example: bobsleigh track, sledge slide, snowtubing, horse riding, horse carriages, fishing, playing tennis, squash, bowling and also swimmnig, use of sauna, fitness, sun beds, massages, paragliding, rafting and other mountain activities. The offer should satisfy everyone. Evenings you can spend with friends in restaurants, bars or night clubs.

Giant Mountains

Giant Mountains are the most visited and most favourite mountains in the Czech republic and are situated in the north-east Bohemia along the polish border. Two thirds of them are in Czech republic, the other third in Poland. On the border is the highest mountain Sněžka, 1602 metres high. The oldest reference about its first inhabitants,which were the Slav tribes, comes from the 6th - 3rd century B.C. The discovery of ores and gemstones lured in 16. century many foreigners. It is also believed that the legend about the famous fairy-tale character Krakonoš - the lord and quardian of the mountains came at the same time. Than the mining expert Krystof from Gendorf came and took over the whole area of mountains. He rebuilt the old fortress in Vrchlabí into a castle with 4 corner pinnacles in 1548. Many shepherd chalets were built - for example "Luční bouda, Martinovka, Bradlerovy boudy". Giant Mountain started to be popular in the 18. century when the herbalists were looking for plants which were used for a production of medicaments.

Considerable part of Giant Mountains belongs to the Giant Mountain National Park (KRNAP), established in 1963. Its fare is 38 500 ha and two thirds of it are woods. The protection of the nature is quite entitled because you can find there over 300 vertebrates and more than 1 200 types of plants which you cannot find anywhere else in the world - called "endemits". Rare and remarkeble is the Gian Mountain flora. On such a small area of lowlands, hilly country and mountains you can find a big sort of platns. From fauna you can also find here famous types of insect, slugs, butterflies, beetles and birds - for example finch, bullbinch, blackbird or woodpecker. You can also meet up with completely different types of animals - lizards, vipers, harts, owls, bats, squirrels and fishes. There is a few nature reserves in Giant Mountains - for example "Černohorské peat-bog, springs of river Labe and Úpa, Rýchory". Tha National Park has got 3 parts and in the first two are only special tourist and skiing routes.

SKIAREAL Špindlerův Mlýn is the most important winter centre in Czech Republic. A lot of important world sport events take place each year here. Sport area is composed of the following centres: Svatý Petr-Hromovka, Medvědín, Horní Mísečky, ski lift Davidovka, ski lift Labská, ski lifts Horal and Krakonoš. Approximately 700 thousands clients visit sport area during winter season. SKIAREAL Špindlerův Mlýn operates 4 chair lifts and 11 ski lifts in Špindlerův Mlýn and Horní Mísečky, total 25 km downhill slopes. 85 % of downhill slopes can be covered by artificial snow in the case of bad weather conditions. Ski ticket bought in any box-office, you can use in all chair lifts and ski lists /ski lifts in Horní Mísečky, Davidovka, Labská and Horal you can buy lower fare/.


Skiareal Spindleruv MlynArea Svatý Petr is the most important sport centre in Špindlerův Mlýn. A lot of important sport events take place each year here. During this winter season you can see 3 World cup competitions, one European cup and a lot of other sport events. 3 chair lifts and 5 ski lifts are open during winter season directly in area. The length of exceeding and preparation of downhill slopes are the first quality in whole Czech Republic. Very visited is snowpark including U ramp. In whole Špindlerův Mlýn /4 chair lifts and 11 ski lifts/ is valid one fare. Svatý Petr is connected with ski area Medvědín by regular SKI BUS. The visitors of Špindlerův Mlýn find many restaurants, ski and snowboard schools, night free time possibilities - swimming pools, bowling, sleigh and sledge route, discotheques and also every day night skiing in new built /in the year 2003/ downhill slope Hromovka here.


Skiareal Spindleruv MlynArea Medvědín is connected by chair lift with area Horní Mísečky. Area Medvědín is more and more visited by the skiers who like comfortable skiing under the sun. Black and red downhill slopes are very good, available for sport skiing. Area Horní Mísečky is available also for the skiers beginners and for the families with the children. Area Horní Mísečky offers 4 ski lifts - allways prepared downhill slopes and snowpark for snowboard skiers. Cross country routes are sought after by lovers of cross country skiing. Cross country routes are daily prepared, it is starting place for ridge tours.

Skiareal Špindlerův Mlýn ensures in areas Svatý Petr and Medvědín summer operation of two chair lifts with transport of bicycles. Top stations of both chair lifts are starting places for touristic routes and offer beautifull views to ridges of Giant Mountains including view to the highest mountain in Czech Republic - Sněžka (1602 m above sea level). Špindlerův Mlýn is place for tourism from 700 to 1400 m sea level. 

Skiareal Spindleruv MlynTennis courtes are opened daily in area Svatý Petr from May to October. From June 2001 will be opened new downhill and dual race for mountain bicycles. Mountain bike competition race are opened for training with using chair lift transport in Svatý Petr. Areas Svatý Petr and Medvědín are starting places for paragliding.
